ABOUT ESSENTIAL THROMBOCYTHEMIA (ET)

UNDERSTAND YOUR ET State of Mine

As you work with your Healthcare Professional to understand and assess your condition, it’s important to be aware of how you feel and how essential thrombocythemia (ET) affects your daily life. This can help you identify your ET State of Mine—or where you are on your journey with ET.

Evaluating your essential thrombocythemia and understanding your ET State of Mine may help you recognize when something isn’t right. This can empower you to talk to your Healthcare Professional about how essential thrombocythemia is affecting you and how it’s changing over time so that you can work together in managing your condition.

What Is Essential Thrombocythemia?

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a rare condition in which a person’s bone marrow makes too many blood platelets (also known as thrombocytes).

Rare condition where the body makes too many blood platelets.

Too many platelets may make it hard for the blood to flow.

SLIDE

About half of people with ET have a mutation—or change—in a certain gene in the body.

Platelets travel through the body’s blood vessels. When a person damages a blood vessel—through a cut, for instance—platelets stick together to form clots and stop the bleeding. In people with ET, the bone marrow makes too many platelets, making it hard for the blood to flow. Unnecessary clots may form, and/or bleeding may increase.

Clotting can lead to serious health problems, like heart attack or stroke.

Learn what causes ET.

How Common Is Essential Thrombocythemia?

Approximately 71,000 to 88,000 people in the United States have ET. Essential thrombocythemia is most common in adults older than 50 years of age. It is more common in women than men.

How Is Essential Thrombocythemia Treated?

Treatment for essential thrombocythemia depends on many factors. Healthcare Professionals consider patients’ risk of blood clots or bleeding, age, and other cardiovascular risks. Treatment strategies may include regular check-ups, medication to reduce platelet counts, or a procedure to lower platelet counts.
