ABC's long-running daytime drama, General Hospital, recently teamed up with Incyte Corporation and developed a series of episodes in which character Anna Devane receives a diagnosis of the rare, chronic blood cancer, polycythemia vera (PV).
Actor Finola Hughes plays the role of Anna Devane. To prepare for her new storyline, Finola met and spoke with Linda, a 68-year-old woman who was diagnosed with PV in 2005. For Finola, the meeting was essential in helping her accurately portray the physical and emotional facets of what her character was going through. During her meeting with Linda, the actor asked a number of questions, and the two talked candidly about how having PV can affect your everyday life.
Watch as Linda, a PV patient, talks with Finola Hughes about her diagnosis journey.
Check out behind-the-scenes footage showing how Finola Hughes prepared for her role as a PV patient.
Linda’s PV Diagnosis
PV, a rare chronic blood cancer, may develop slowly and remain unrecognized for years. It is often diagnosed by chance, following a routine exam by a Healthcare Professional. Linda’s diagnosis followed a similar pattern. Unexplained symptoms such as severe vertigo and mental confusion first brought her to her Healthcare Professional’s office. Linda admitted that she had ignored her symptoms for a long time, believing they were simply part of getting older.
